Pre-Monsoon rains in Mumbai during the months of March, April and May are poor but, with the arrival of June the rainfall amounts shoot up drastically. This is mainly because Monsoon officially arrives in the city by June 10. However, the onset of Monsoon over Mumbai has possibly been delayed by 4-5 days this year due to which the pre-Monsoon showers are yet to intensify. Usually when the Monsoon is around the corner, pre-Monsoon activity picks up in the city.
But conditions look favourable now for pre-Monsoon showers to begin in Mumbai in next 24-48 hours. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the cyclonic circulation which is in the Arabian Sea, off Kerala coast is likely to become organized and shift northwards, a little away from the coast.
The system will result in rainfall over Mumbai and coastal regions including Karnataka and Konkan and Goa in next 24 hours.
However, there is still doubt whether the circulation will intensify into a cyclone or not as cool waters of the north Arabian Sea are not favourable for the intensification of the system. In case the circulation develops into a cyclone, it will affect Monsoon performance in the west coast and Peninsular India.
As the circulation turns into a cyclone, the system draws a lot of energy from the sea resulting in cooling of the sea surface. This causes lack of energy in the sea, which takes some time to replenish.
Meanwhile, clouds are gathering and hovering just outside Mumbai due to which the neighbouring areas like Pune, Ratnagiri and Goa have observed good rainfall in the last 24 hours.
