Pre-monsoon showers commence in full swing over Northeast India

Rain in Northeast IndiaPre-monsoon rain has started in full swing over Northeast India as we enter the month of April. Most of the places have already recorded over 100 mm of rain in just the first five days of the month.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, a low level cyclonic circulation over West Bengal and adjoining Odisha aligned with an anti-cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal has given moderate to heavy rain over the region.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Silchar in Assam recorded 40 mm of rain, Jorhat 11 mm, Guwahati 6.6 mm and Tezpur 5 mm. In Tripura, Agartala received a whopping 108.3 mm of rain, while Kailashahar got 40.4 mm of rain.

Imphal, the capital of Manipur, observed 44.5 mm of rain. Similarly, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya recorded 25.7 mm of rain, Kohima in Mizoram got 21.2 mm and Lengpui received 29.4 mm of rain.

According to the latest forecast by Skymet, isolated heavy rainfall is expected over the region during the next 24 to 48 hours. Both the weather systems will continue to give moderate rain till Friday, reducing thereafter.

In March, when the entire North and Central India had been witnessing surplus rain, Northeast India did not see any weather activity and was rain deficit. Till April 1, Assam and Meghalaya had recorded 37 mm of rain against the monthly average of 83.4 mm, making it 56 per cent deficit.

Similarly another division that includes Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (NMMT) was also deficit by 72 per cent. The division recorded 22.9 mm of rain against the normal average of 81.9 mm.

Arunachal Pradesh was the only pocket that had witnessed some weather activity and was deficit by 33 per cent. It has recorded 128.6 mm of rain against the normal of 193.1 mm.
