For the past few days, several parts of Peninsular India have been reeling under scorching weather conditions.

While Bangalore just recorded its hottest day in April in a decade, Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu has been observing temperatures well above the normal levels.

Usually, by this time, Pre-Monsoon activity does make an appearance over Peninsular India bringing in some relief from the uncomfortable weather conditions.

However, this year had a different story to tell. Pre-Monsoon thunderstorm activity has almost remained absent from South India.

Due to lack of thunderstorm activity and increasing temperatures, discomfort has increased in several areas. The trough or wind discontinuity which runs across Peninsular India during the Pre-Monsoon season. It is a semi-permanent feature, and it keeps oscillating east to west resulting in the formation of convective clouds which are responsible for thunderstorms over the region.

However, due to lack of moisture, cloud build up has not been taking place, keeping the showers far away from South India.

Now, the trough is presently extending from Marathwada region up to Comorin area across Interior Karnataka, and Interior Tamil Nadu will result in isolated thunderstorm activity over some parts of Kerala, Interior Tamil Nadu and southern parts of Karnataka.

In the next 48 hours, conditions are slightly favourable for cloud formation in Bangalore, but, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Bangalore will also observe some thunderstorm activity. Meanwhile, Chennai will remain warm as the system will not affect the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
