The three-month long pre-Monsoon season which lasts from March to May has ended on a rainy note.
While March had ended with normal rainfall, April was hot and dry and was majorly dominated by heatwave to severe heatwave conditions. However, May had something different in store.
Rains had started during the first week itself, leading to abatement of heatwave conditions from several areas. May also saw the maiden tropical storm of the season. Cyclone Roanu first made its appearance as a cyclonic circulation in Southwest Bay of Bengal around May. Thereafter, it continued to become marked and finally into a cyclone.
During this journey, Roanu gave some record-breaking heavy to extremely heavy rains right from Tamil Nadu coast up to West Bengal Coast across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha between May 16 and May 21. This also gave good rains over northeastern states.
Meanwhile during this period, northwestern plains were reeling under severe heatwave conditions. Particularly, parts of West Rajasthan that saw mercury surpassing 50-degree mark which is very rare.
During the season, Kerala and hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand saw unprecedented hot weather conditions. But Gujarat that is prone to heatwave, saw minimal heat this time.
Apart from torrential rains, the passage of Roanu had also led to several changes over the Indian weather. Post the cyclonic storm, East India has been witnessing on and off rains which has also kept temperatures under check over the region and adjoining Central India as well.
As we entered in the last week of May, we saw pre-Monsoon rains picking up pace over Kerala and Coastal Karnataka both in terms of intensity and spread. Both the regions have been recording light to moderate rains with isolated heavy spell for the last 7 consecutive days.
According to Skymet Weather, weather conditions are now favourable for the onset of Monsoon over the Indian mainland very soon. With this, we can now expect heat to reduce over the entire region and weather will now go warm and humid.
Also with effect from June 1, the rainfall figures recorded across the country would be counted as Monsoon rains.
