As reiterated by Skymet Weather, heavy pre-Monsoon rains lashed several parts of Kolkata on Wednesday morning.
Rain and thundershowers started around 7 am and lasted for two hours. These showers were also accompanied with high velocity winds exceeding 90 kmph.
Dum Dum Observatory recorded whopping 41 mm of rain from 7 am to 9 am. While, Alipore Observatory received 17 mm during the same time.
At present, rains have stopped but weather conditions are extremely pleasant over Kolkata. In wake of the spell, maximum temperatures have plummeted significantly to 27°C around 11:30 am.
According to Skymet Weather, weather conditions remain conducive for another spell of rain and thundershowers today by late afternoon or evening hours.
These rains can be attributed a trough running through Gangetic West Bengal along with moist southwesterly winds blowing from Bay of Bengal.

Updated on June 1, 2016 6:00 AM (IST): Pre-Monsoon rains to continue over Kolkata
Kolkata has been witnessing on and off light rain and thundershowers for last couple of days. However, intensity of showers being light, people across the capital city have been reeling under scorching hot and humid weather.
In span of last 24 hours, Dum Dum Observatory had recorded 5 mm of rain while, Alipore Observatory witnessed 0.4 mm only.
Now, pre-Monsoon showers are likely to pick up pace once again. According to Skymet Weather, weather conditions are quite conducive for the fresh spell of rain, thundershowers or thunderstorm on Wednesday. Isolated dust storms activities are also likely during this period.
Presently a cyclonic circulation is marked over Bihar and West Bengal region. In addition to this, a trough is also extending from this system up to Odisha.
Moreover, moist southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal are also reaching up to the city. All the factors combined together will bring rain over the city on June 1 and June 2.
As reiterated by Skymet Weather, these pre-Monsoon activity will be observed during late afternoon or evening hours or early morning hours. These showers are generally triggered by heat coupled with available moisture in the air. Maximum temperatures peak between 12 pm and 2 pm, thus activity take place after that only.
These showers are much needed as they will bring immense relief from the sultry weather conditions. Though day maximums have been settling several notches above the normal average, but it is the high humidity which make feel-like temperature quite high.
