During the month of April and May plenty of pre-Monsoon activities occur over Kerala. The intensity and spread of rain and thundershowers normally increase in the month of May. As an exception, the month of April this year turned out to be one of the driest on record for entire Kerala.
Due to lack of pre-Monsoon showers temperatures over most parts of Kerala remain above normal. Malampuzha in Kerala recorded the highest temperature in 29 years at 41.8°C on April 26.

During first few days of May, heatwave conditions prevailed over Kerala. On Thursday, scattered rain and thundershowers occurred over the state with Alappuzha recording 20 mm of rain. After 48 hours, we expect the rain intensity to increase over the state and many areas will receive light to moderate rain and thundershowers.
Skymet predicts that pre-Monsoon activity will increase from May 12 onwards. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over coastal districts of Kerala including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Alappuzha and Kannur. Thus, we can say that pre-Monsoon activities which remained dormant throughout the month of April will pick up pace. During the second week of May, temperatures will come down leading to pleasant weather conditions with good rain and thundershowers over the state.
