Pre-Monsoon rains likely in Purnea, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar

Fairly widespread light to moderate pre-Monsoon showers have occurred over East India during last 24 hours. In fact, on and off rains have been continuing for last few days in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. Isolated places have received heavy showers as well.

During last 24 hours, Bihar received widespread rains with Purnea recording 30 mm, Supaul 23 mm, and Bhagalpur 8 mm. As of now, these rains are due to a cyclonic circulation over Bihar and a trough extending from this system up to Odisha.

Back to back Western Disturbances after affecting the western Himalayas tend to travel eastwards. In the process they tend to increase moisture over the foothills of East India, bringing rain over northern parts of Bihar and West Bengal. This is the reason the northern districts of West Bengal and Bihar have been receiving more rains.

Now these rains will continue for another 24 hours. Yesterday, Skymet Weather had said pre-Monsoon showers are likely to reappear over Kolkata. We still maintain that one or two good spells of rain and thundershowers are expected to lash the capital city of West Bengal during next 24 to 48 hours.
