During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Vavuniya recorded 61.4 mm followed by Anuradhapura 34.0 mm, Maha Illuppallama 33.5 mm, Hambantota 27.4 mm, Jaffna 22.9 mm, Kurunegala 16.0 mm, Kandy 15.2 mm and traces were also seen at Ratnapura.

The main reason for the occurrence of these rains is a low-pressure area, which formed over south of Sri Lanka and gradually moved towards Lakshadweep intensifying into a depression.

Currently, this weather system has weakened and moved away from Sri Lanka. Thus, the intensity of rains is expected to decrease.

However, for the next 24 hours, light scattered rains may continue over southwest parts of Sri Lanka. Thereafter rains will be seen easing out.

Weather will be almost dry over most parts of Sri Lanka, expect the southern districts where on and off rains may continue. Temperatures will start rising once again.

Pre-monsoon season starts from the month of March and thundery activities also increase over Sri Lanka during this time. Successive months of April and May will also witness increasing intensity and frequency of thundershower activities.
