Pre Monsoon rains in Manali, Gulmarg, Vaishno Devi to reduce, mercury to rise

Updated on April 21, at 10:45 am: As predicted by Skymet Weather, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand recorded scattered light to mod rain and thundershower activity.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Srinagar recorded 34 mm rains, QaziGund 36 mm, Jammu 11 mm, Tehri 6 mm and Shimla 3 of rains.

Now, the Western Disturbance has weakened and has moved away. Therefore, rainfall activity is likely to reduce over the regions. With this day temperatures are expected to rise over the hilly states. In fact, after 48 hours, heatwave like conditions may prevail over some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Updated on April 20, at 03:45 pm: Fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershower activity occurred over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the last 24 hours. In fact, isolated heavy pre Monsoon spells were also witnessed by Jammu and Kashmir.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Banihal recorded rain to the tune of 32.2 mm, Batote 19 mm, Pahalgam 19.5 mm, Mandi 19 mm, Gulmarg 15 mm and Manali 11 mm of rains. In the same time frame, Katra witnessed 6.2 mm of rains, Srinagar 5 mm, Jammu and Shimla saw 2 mm of rains, each.

In wake of the heavy spells, incidents of landslides and mudslides were reported which eventually led to the closure of Jammu and Kashmir highway.

As per Skymet Weather, the present Western Disturbance is moving away. However, a feeble Western Disturbance which is over North Pakistan and adjoining regions will quickly move towards the Western Himalayas.

This system is expected to give good rains over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh today. In fact, scattered rains are also likely to continue over Uttarakhand also. These activities along with hailstorm are likely to significantly reduce by tomorrow and only isolated pockets will see some rains. Therefore, chances of landslides and mudslides are still there.

Popular hill stations such as Manali, Shimla, Srinagar, Gulmarg and Vaishno Devi are anticipated to continue witnessing Pre Monsoon rains today.

Thereafter, the intensity of rains is likely to decrease significantly and the weather is likely to clear up gradually. During that time, the day temperatures will rise and night temperatures are likely to fall marginally.
