In fact, adjoining state of Tamil Nadu has also witnessing pre-Monsoon rainfall activity since few days. The southern and interior and some coastal pockets Tamil Nadu have been recording rain and thundershowers. However, the intensity of these spells increased over Tamil Nadu in past day, with few places recording heavy to very heavy rainfall.
In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Coonoor recorded heavy rain to the tune of 98 mm, followed by Kozhikode at 38.3 mm, Thiruvananthapuram at 33.6 mm and Palayankottai 21.4 mm rains. In the same time frame, Kottayam witnessed 4.6 mm of rains, Nagapattinam 3.2 mm and Kanyakumari 3.1 mm.
These rains occurred due to the formation of a cyclonic circulation near Sri Lanka. Earlier a trough was extending over Sri Lanka and Southwest Bay of Bengal which was responsible for rains.
Gradually, this cyclonic circulation will move towards west and the intensity of rain will reduce over Tamil Nadu.
As per Skymet Weather, we expect light to moderate rain and thundershower activities to continue over the southern and interior districts of Tamil Nadu for at least next two days. Meanwhile, Chennai rains will not make an appearance. Thereafter, there will be significant decrease in pre Monsoon rains after the next 24 hours.
However, Kerala would continue to witness light to moderate rains with few heavy spells in the upcoming days. It is anticipated that the state of Kerala will record on and off showers thereafter also and the weather will not go completely dry.
