Pre-Monsoon Rain: Record-breaking rainfall in Chennai brings temperatures down

In a swing of weather, Chennai finally joined the rain party as pre-monsoon rain poured heavily over the city in last 24 hours.  While the temperature plummeted by 10°C for a while, bringing the much-awaited relief to the residents from the sweltering summer, it is expected to remain below normal by 4-5°C for another 24 hours.

Rain waterlogged several places like Guindy, Adyar, Taramani in just an hour as record rainfall lashed the city. The city received 103 mm of rain in last 24 hours which surpassed the all-time highest rainfall of 100.3 mm that happened on 12^th April, 1951. The monthly average rainfall for the city stands at mere 7.7 mm.

The record-breaking rainfall in Chennai during April is rare as the city most likely receive such heavy rain during May.

Due to heavy rain, traffic movement came to a grinding halt as vehicles were piled up and left to crawl as several roads across the city were waterlogged.

The wet spell is likely to continue in Tamil Nadu for another couple of days as the easterly waves are giving isolated heavy rain in the coastal areas now and will continue to give heavy rain for next 2 days.
