Updated on May 14, 2016 10:30 AM (IST): Pre-Monsoon rain lashes Kolkata, more in offing

Pre-Monsoon rains and thundershowers have lashed Kolkata during last 24 hours, bringing relief from hot and sultry weather conditions.

Though on and off light rains have been witnessed over the capital city but Friday afternoon saw some good showers.
Dum Dum Observatory recorded 23 mm of rain, while Alipore Observatory received 11 mm of rain.

According to Skymet Weather, moisture laden southeasterly winds from Bay of Bengal are blowing over the city. These increased humidity levels along with high day maximum led development of thunderclouds, giving light to moderate rain and thundershowers.

Weathermen predict that Saturday could also see isolated thunderstorm or thundershower activities on account of leftover moisture in the air. As reiterated by Skymet weather, these pre-Monsoon showers usually occur during late afternoon or evening hours.

These fresh rains resulted in marginal drop in the maximum temperatures by 1. However, day maximums are still settling above the normal average. On Friday, Kolkata had recorded 36.6°C, two degrees above average.

But despite drop in mercury, weather will continue to be uncomfortably warm on account of high humidity levels.

Further, day temperatures will again rise on Saturday with partly cloudy sky. With this, maximum temperature will rise once again, paving way for hot and humid weather.

However, nights and mornings was fairly comfortable over the city as morning temperature settled below normal by two degrees at 24°C.
