During last 4 days, the City Of Joy: Kolkata is witnessing moderate to heavy rainfall. Even the neighboring parts of Gangetic West Bengal witnessed good rainfall activity in the same period. This rainy spell was due to a cyclonic circulation over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining areas. A trough was also extending up to South Odisha over Gangetic West Bengal.
Moreover, an anti-cyclone was persisting over central Bay of Bengal. Due to which moderate southwesterly winds were increasing moisture over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. The combined effect of these weather systems has given moderate to heavy rain over Kolkata and adjoining areas.
Now a trough is extending from Bihar to Chhattisgarh and another trough is extending from Assam to North Bay of Bengal, therefore now weather activities will reduce over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. However parts of Odisha may receive some rainfall. But we expect weather of Kolkata to go dry and temperatures will once again start rising.
Day will become warm and humid and afternoon may have slight discomfort due to high humid levels. This rainfall was unusual for Kolkata as the monthly average is 35.2 mm. Now, we do not expect any rain activity over Kolkata for 3-4 days. In the last 24 hours, Kolkata has received 23 mm of rainfall. This takes the total rainfall count of Kolkata for the month of March to 139 mm.
The next episode of rain over Kolkata may reoccur over March 17-18, but at time we do not expect heavy rain but spot rain or 1 or 2 short spells cannot be ruled out.
