According to Skymet Weather, the prolonged rainy spell is likely to continue for next 24 hours. At present, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over Sub Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining East Bihar. A trough is extending from this system up to Gangetic West Bengal.

In wake of these two combined weather systems, on and off rain and thundershower activities are going on over many parts of the state. In fact, during the last 24 hours, Asansol recorded extremely heavy rain to the tune of 98 mm. In the same time span, Sriniketan recorded 14 mm of rains, while Burdwan and Bankura also witnessed traces of rains.

As the system is likely to persist, conditions are favorable for few good spells of rain over West Bengal during the next 24 hours. The city of joy, Kolkata is also expected to receive light rain and thundershower activity 24 to 48. However, these activities over the capital would be mainly in patches.

The occurrence time of these activities would be mainly during the late afternoon and evening hours. Thereafter, a significant reduction is expected in the rainfall activity as the trough and the cyclonic circulation will fade away.

The weather is expected to remain very warm and humid in spite of the rain over the central districts of the state whereas it would be comparatively comfortable over Sub Himalayan West Bengal.

Along with pre Monsoon rains, lightning strikes and squally winds would also accompany. During the pre-Monsoon season, particularly the month of May is very crucial as violent thunderstorm and thundershowers are very common.

However, when Monsoon sets in between June 5 and June 10, the frequency and intensity of violent thunderstorm and thundershower decreases. The reduction in such activities is due to the lowering of temperatures and settling up of southeasterly humid winds across West Bengal.
