Updated on April 10, 09:50 - As predicted by Skymet Weather, during the last 24 hours, rain and thundershower activities were observed in parts of Kerala. Even though intense clouds build up over the region, but rains were only observed in few pockets.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Alappuzha and Wayanad recorded 21.7 mm of rain, followed by Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram 17.8 mm, Kochi 7.7 mm, Idukki 4.8 mm and Kottayam 2.6 mm.

These weather activities occurred in association with the wind discontinuity extending from South Madhya Maharashtra to Comorin area across interior parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and adjoining parts of Kerala.

At present, also this wind discontinuity persists. Therefore, today also we expect rain and thundershower activities to occur in parts of Kerala. These rains will only occur towards the later parts of the day.

Talking about the temperatures, most parts in the state is still observing maximum temperatures in high-30s. Yesterday, Alappuzha recorded its day temperature at 37˚C, followed by Punalur 37.2˚C, Kozhikode 36.4˚C, Kottayam 36˚C and Kochi 32.8˚C.

Updated on April 9, 14:39 - Pre-Monsoon rain in Kochi, Trivandrum, Punalur and Kottayam today

The Pre-Monsoon season has not been performing well in Kerala since its onset month of March. The month for the state ended with rain deficiency to the tune of 53%. Following the similar trend in April also, Kerala is observing 65% rainfall deficiency as on April 8.

Normally Kerala receives rains due to the development of cyclonic circulation over Comorin region and a trough extending from this system towards parts of Kerala. And at times, due to the formation of a wind discontinuity passing in proximity to the state. However, this not have been the case so far.

Now, we can expect some changes in the prevailing weather situation. At present, a wind discontinuity is extending from Rayalaseema to Comorin region across South Interior Karnataka, Interior Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Thus, in the wake of this system, thunderstorm activity will occur in parts of Kerala today towards later half of the day.

Southern parts of the state will witness more rains as compared to the northern parts. Places such as Trivandrum, Kochi, Punalur and Kottayam will witness rain and thundershower activities. As these rains will be patchy and for short duration, weather during the daytime will be warm and humid and sky will remain partly cloudy.

Weather Alert: Rain and thundershowers with strong winds are likely over Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kollam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Wayanad during next the 2 to 4 hours.
