A strong earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale shook the coast of Northern California around 9.30 am (IST) on Monday. The epicenter was located 50 miles west of Eureka in California. The quake was followed by half a dozen of aftershocks with one of them measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale.
The quake was felt widely and strongly but there weren’t reports of any damage. Neither was there any Tsunami threat issued by the Pacific Warning Tsunami Centre.
Located about 270 miles northwest of San Francisco and having a population of 27,000, Eureka is familiar to such activities. Earthquakes are a common phenomenon in this region.
In February 2012 an earthquake measuring 5.6 had hit the area but it did not cause any potential damage. Another quake measuring 6.5 had rattled the region in 2010 which did prove to be a threat as it was 25 miles closer to land as compared to the recent quake on Monday.
