Chennai rains have remained far and few for quite some time now. So much so that the city has been receiving very little or no rains during the past few days. While last year had witnessed flooding rains over the city at this time of November, this year, rains are a little too far away from the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
Usually, weather systems that develop in the form of a cyclonic circulation, low pressure area and sometimes even depression tend to give some amounts of rains over the region. This time, the systems have been few and have developed far away from Chennai unlike last year when successive developments of weather systems had resulted in bumper rains for the city.
At present, a trough of low is over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal which was formed some time ago. Under the influence of this weather feature, another system is expected to develop in the form of a low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal during the next two to three days.
This system is expected to give good rains over several parts of Sri Lanka as well as southern parts of Tamil Nadu. However, this low will fail to give any rains over Chennai and its adjoining areas as the city lies in the northern region of Tamil Nadu. Also, since the weather system will not get much of a sea travel, much intensification and movement is likely.
Chennai is on its way of witnessing the worst November in terms of rains during the last four years with less than 60 mm of rains until now.
