The state of Kerala has been the only state in South India which receives rainfall throughout the year. During the month of March, Pre-Monsoon showers start picking up pace and rains also increase during this period to quite an extent.

The trough of low, cyclonic circulations and low-pressure areas start to form over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and sometimes over Southeast Arabian Sea during the month of March leading to increase in rainfall activities over Kerala.

Now, a well-marked low-pressure area has formed over Comorin area and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to move in a northwest direction towards Southeast Arabian Sea and is expected to intensify into a depression as well.

Therefore, light to moderate rains are likely over parts of Kerala during the next two to three days. Rainfall intensity will be more on March 13 and 14. Thereafter, intensity will reduce but scattered rains will continue.

Cities including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Kannur, Kozhikode are expected to see rains this time.

As the weather system will move via southern tip of Kerala therefore wind speed is expected to increase over Kerala coast March 12 onward and will remain the same until March 14. The speed of winds may be in order of 30-40 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph.

Moreover, sea conditions will also be rough during this period which is why it is advised to not to venture out in the sea and take precautionary measure. Fishing activities must also be suspended for some time.

As of now, we do not expect the system to intensify into a cyclone, but authorities should remain on their toes. This weather system is expected to take a similar route like Cyclone Ockhi but intensity will be much less.
