The weather over West Bengal remained dry during the last 24 hours but at the same time, scattered showers were observed in Odisha. Now, both the states are likely to see some heavy to very heavy rains in the coming days.
According to the weathermen at Skymet Weather, rain activities are likely to now intensify over both these eastern states. This would be on account of the formation of a depression over north-central Bay of Bengal. The system which is presently seen as a low pressure, is anticipated to travel in the westerly direction towards the coast. Hence, rainfall intensity will pick up pace over Gangetic West Bengal and many parts of Odisha.
Meanwhile, scattered showers will carry on over remaining parts of West Bengal. However, the intensity would increase considerably over Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha during the next 48 hours wherein few heavy to very heavy spells are expected.
Areas like Midnapore, South Parganas and Kolkata may get to see heavy rains. Correspondingly, Puri, Balasore and Cuttack in Odisha would be lashed by heavy to very heavy showers.
There are expectations that these rains would lower the rain deficiency to some degree in West Bengal, while amplify the rain surplus of Odisha. As on September 18, Odisha was rain surplus rains by 11%, whereas the state of West Bengal has been rain deficient to the tune of 20%.
