The state of Tamil Nadu has been witnessing good rains for the past two to three days. While rainfall activity has been on the lower side over the northern parts, however, it has been the southern parts of the state where heavy rains have been lashing the region.
During the last 24 hours as well, heavy rains have occurred over many areas of the state. In fact, some parts of the city of Chennai also saw a few sharp showers.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Kanyakumari recorded a whopping 63 mm of rain, Thanjavur 55 mm, Chennai 59 mm, Tondi 40 mm, Parangipettai 37 mm, Atiramapattinam 32 mm, Karaikal 25 mm, Tiruttani 23 mm, Kodaikanal 24 mm, and Dharmapuri 5 mm.
These rains have been attributed to the deep depression which is presently lying over Comorin area and adjoining region about 240 km WNW of Galle in Sri Lanka and 170 km SE of Kanyakumari. The system is expected to move in a west-northwest direction and become a cyclonic storm Ockhi during the next 12 hours.

South Tamil Nadu will continue to witness heavy to very heavy rains for another 24 hours. Cities including Kanyakumari, Sriviakuntam, Tuticorin, Cuddalore, Nagercoil, Rameshwaram, Ramanathapuram, Tondi, Kovilpatti, Nanguneri, and Pamban will be the ones witnessing hefty showers. In the view of these rains, the schools in the districts including Thoothukudi or Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar are closed today.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains are expected over Chennai, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Karaikal and Madurai as they are slightly away from the weather system.
However, after 24 hours, heavy rains will take a backseat and activity will reduce to quite an extent as the cyclone will move away from the Indian landmass and churn in the Arabian Sea.
