Sri Lanka has been witnessing fairly widespread of rainfall due to a well-marked low-pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas. A trough is also extending from this system up to South Tamil Nadu across Sri Lanka. In view of this, heavy spells of rain have occurred in Sri Lanka during the last 24 hours.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Galle recorded 36.6 mm of rainfall followed by Hambantota where 36.3 mm rain was observed. Other areas to have received good rains include Nuwara Eliya 29.4 mm, Maha Illuppallama 27.8 mm, Puttalam 18.5 mm and Ratmalana 13.4 mm.

Moving ahead on this, we expect the well-marked low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal to intensify into a depression and then turn into a cyclonic storm, progressively. Due to this, moisture concentration over the Bay of Bengal is moving towards north and northeast areas now and we expect the rains to decrease subsequently over parts of Sri Lanka.
Thus, in the coming days, rainfall activity is likely to decrease over Sri Lanka and the cyclone will then gradually turn into a depression in the next 24 hours.
