With the drop in night temperatures in Delhi, cool air near the surface has mixed up with dust, industrial pollution and Diwali smoke to create smog that could continue for another three days. The movement of the Western Disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir has changed the wind pattern and easterly winds would prevail in the region. Due to this, smog will not be able to escape the atmosphere till the another band of northerly winds do not push them away.
Rain is expected in Delhi on the 6th and the 7th that will help smog to settle as suspended particles will fall off or get blown away from the atmosphere.
The moist and slow moving easterly winds have trapped the particles in the air closer to the surface, however, in about three days the northerly winds, which will be dry and blow at much faster speeds, will push the smog away as well as inverse the current state of cooler air on the surface with warmer air over it to the opposite.
