The state of Uttar Pradesh is spread over a large area and is divided into two meteorological sub-divisions of West Uttar Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh. The weather of West UP is almost similar to that of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi in North India, while the weather in East UP resembles that of Bihar.

According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, East Uttar Pradesh receives 897.6 mm of seasonal rainfall, while West Uttar Pradesh observes 769.4 mm of rain.

The Monsoon started off on a good note this time for both the regions which is evident from the fact that West UP by the end of June was surplus by 4% and East UP observed normal rains. West UP continued to receive good rains along the northern parts during the first half of July as well. By the middle of July East UP was observing normal rain (-16%), while West UP was surplus by a good 21%.

Thereafter rainfall in both the regions began to decline. And by the end of July East UP was deficient by 32% and West UP saw the surplus slide to -18%.

August also proved to be poor for the state in terms of rainfall. According to the data available with Skymet, the deficiency in East UP and West UP mounted to 36% and 33%, respectively by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, dry weather has been prevailing in the state for the last fortnight due to which the deficiency at the moment has risen to 45% in East UP and 43% in West UP. Due to lack of rain both the sub-divisions are turning out to become the most deficient pockets of the country.

However, by September 20 a fresh spell of rain is approaching the region. It is expected to last till September 23 and give some good amounts of rain in the state, particularly in East Uttar Pradesh. This will help the deficiency to come down a little.

At the end of the Monsoon season last year, East UP had recorded 517 mm of rain against the season average of 897.6 mm, while West UP recorded 339 mm of rain against 769.4 mm. This year too the Monsoon has panned out in a similar fashion in Uttar Pradesh so far.
