rain in chennai The week ending November 26 has been very disappointing for the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in terms of Northeast Monsoon rain. Rainfall in both the states has been patchy and below normal at many places.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Tamil Nadu in the last week has received only 19.3 mm of rain again the normal of 33.2 mm, which is 42% deficit. Some very poor conditions have also been observed with Chennai, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Perambalur, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore being 100% deficit.

However, the patchy nature of rain has given isolated heavy rain at some places like Kanyakumari, which has observed 85.7 mm of rain against the weekly average of 32.1 mm. Similarly Tirunelveli also recorded 122.5 mm of rain against the average of 36.7 mm, which is 234% surplus. Toothukudi also had some luck with 103.9 mm of rain being observed against the weekly normal of 34.5 mm. But these figures were not enough to cover cumulative deficit for the week.

On the other hand, Northeast Monsoon rain has been deficit by 61% in Kerala this week. There hasn’t been a single place in the state that has recorded surplus rain.

However, with the low pressure in the Southwest Bay of Bengal, some good amounts of rain could be witnessed in Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the next 48 hours.
