Poorest September for Mumbai rains in a decade, season still remains surplus

September 29, 2018 12:26 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The city of Mumbai observes rainfall activity only until the month of September. Thereafter, rainfall reduces significantly in the month of October and the commercial capital of the country becomes practically dry between the month of November and April.

This time the month of September has been quite a disappointing month as far as rainfall activity is concerned. there were hardly any rainfall activities during this month wherein the city of Dreams could only record a mere 74 mm of rainfall. The average monthly mean of September is 341.4 mm.

There was a heavy spell a day before however the Santa Cruz observatory only recorded 7 mm of rainfall.

In the last 24 hours from 8: 30 a.m. on Friday, Mumbai recorded 3.6 mm of rain.

With just about a day left, it does not seem that Mumbai is expected to receive any good rainfall activity which means that the monthly total will remain below the 100 mm mark making September 2018 the poorest in the last decade.

However, since the first half of the monsoon season was exceptionally good, Santa Cruz observatory continues to have surplus rains with 2239.6 mm this season which is likely to remain so.

Colaba observatory however remains short of 270 mm making it deficient this season.

Therefore, when the first half of monsoon season was quite a boon for the city of Mumbai, the second half was equally disappointing.
