Poor performance of Pan India rains this week, upcoming week may see some good spells

The week between Decmber 16 and 22 has been one of the poorest weeks this season. Moreover, pan India rains have been recorded at 0.1 mm against the normal of 3 mm during the aforementioned period. While it does not rain significantly over the country, northern and southern parts do witness some rainfall activities during the third week of December.

For the southern parts, Northeast Monsoon is in its retreat phase but even then rains are seen in some parts of the region. On the other hand, this is the time when several Western Disturbances cross the Northern Hills of India, resulting in good rains and snow over the hills and rains in the northern plains.

However, this week, there have been three days wherein rainfall has been nil throughout the country. The rainiest pocket during this period includes Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.

Northeast India, East India have completely remained dry during this period. Rain surplus between October 1 and Dec 15 stood at 48 percent. However, with almost no rains during this period, the season's surplus has reduced to 44 percent now after poor rainfall between Decemebr 16 and 22.

Talking about the rain forecast, rainfall activity is all set to pick up for the hills and plains of North India. Some activity may be seen in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and even up to Jharkhand. South India including Coastal Tamil Nadu may see some rainfall in the fag end. Other parts of South India may witness no rains between December 23 and 29.
