Weather in Kolkata

Kolkata is amongst the rainiest cities in the country observing a four-month-long Monsoon period. The Southwest Monsoon sets in early here and the withdrawal is also very late. During the entire Monsoon season, the city records more than 300 mm of rains almost every month, with July being the rainiest one, wherein the average rainfall is 396 mm.

Moreover, the rainfall activities remain intact here even after the Monsoon recedes. However, this year, the fortune has turned against the city in terms of good rains. And the rain gods have only given poor Monsoon showers over the city until now.

The month of July is just about to end and so far the capital city has only recorded 138 mm of rains. The rainfall performance in June was also below average as a paltry 93 mm of rain was recorded against the normal of 300 mm.

In the absence of good Monsoon showers, the deficit in the city is 66% (June 1 to July 28), which is one of the highest deficits in West Bengal. In fact, almost all the districts of the state have remained deprived of good Monsoon rains so far and hence the overall deficiency in the state is standing at 49% (June 1 to July 28).

In the last 24 hours as well, Monsoon rains have remained on the lower side and only moderate showers to the tune of 24 mm have been recorded in Kolkata. We expect light to moderate rains to continue in the city for at least a week.

Meanwhile, the sky would remain cloudy to overcast and temperatures would settle in the mid-30s. The weather will remain comfortable for the residents.

The weather of Kolkata is governed by a series of Monsoon related Weather Systems. However, it is mostly the weather systems that brew up in the Northwest Bay of Bengal that activate the Monsoon conditions resulting in light to moderate rains.

It will be around the first week of August when a strong system is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal and bring in heavy showers for the city.
