As the winter lurks over the northwest region of the country, it is the capital city Delhi and NCR where air is already thick with pollutants, making life tough. With October ending, the morning temperatures are on fall in Delhi and NCR.
On October 26, minimum temperature was 18.4°C, but as of today morning, the temperature has further dropped down to 16.1°C. The visibility this morning went down to 800 meters near Palam. This sudden drop in visibility was due to the pollution mixed with haze.
In winters, temperatures drop quickly with winds blowing at lighter speeds. And due to the absence of major weather systems, the sky is also clear. These factors allow the Earth’s surface to cool down quickly. This leads to condensation of moisture available in the air near the Earth’s surface. The dust and smoke particles mix with the condensed layer of haze and forms smog or smoke haze.
This layer or blanket of pollution is suspended in the atmosphere due to absence of strong winds, which is the case at present. So at present many areas of Delhi are under threat of severe rise in the levels of pollution. And the sad part is that no significant relief can be seen in sight.
Adding to all the ruckus of pollution is the burning of crop stubble in Haryana and Punjab. So the light winds from west and northwest direction are allowing the smoke from this stubble burning to enter Delhi and NCR, adding misery to the daily life.
