Air Pollution in Delhi has once again made a comeback as the onset of winters finally make an appearance. The air quality in the national capital continues to be hazardous. While no measures were being taken as the residents of Delhi continued to choke, the Supreme Court has finally approved the pollution code for Delhi and the NCR region.
As per centre’s graded plan, the odd-even formula which was introduced keeping in view of the pollution conditions can be enforced anytime if the PM 2.5 levels exceed the 300 mark for a stretch of 48 hours. Not only this, in case of very poor air quality which means the PM 2.5 being between 121 and 250, diesel generator sets will be banned and parking fee will also be increased by three to four times.
When the air quality is severe or very poor, schools will be ordered to stop all outdoor sessions as well as sports activities. During the time of severe PM 2.5 levels which is above 250, it is recommended for the Badarpur Power Plant to be closed, along with closing works of stone crushing and brick kilns.
The Supreme Court has also asked the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to set up more monitoring stations and improve infrastructure within the next six months. At present, there are only six stations in Delhi-NCR.
