Poll bound Bankura and Burdwan in West Bengal reeling under heatwave

Heatwave conditions have been prevailing in entire West Bengal and other states in East and Central India for the last few days.

Day temperatures are settling above 40°C in East Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Marathwada, Vidarbha, North Interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Thirty one seats in West Midnapore, Bankura and Burdwan will go to polls in phase 1-B of the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections on Monday. These districts are reeling under severe heatwave conditions.

On Sunday, Bankura recorded 45.1°C as maximum, which is 8°C above normal. This the highest in last 10 years and just a shade lower than the all-time highest April temperature of 45.2°C. Such extreme weather will definitely affect the voter turnout. However, till about 11 am 48% votes were registered in West Midnapore, 32.51 % in Bankura and 35.45% Burdwan. Kolkata also recorded 40.5°C as maximum, which is the third highest in last 10 years.

Here’s a look at the temperatures in other places of East and Central India:

Government schools have been shut from Monday onwards and office hours have been reduced.

In this belt winds are blowing from the Northwest direction, amounting to “loo”. Only when the winds change direction and start coming from the sea, we can expect some relief.

The night temperatures are also quite high in higher twenties at present. This is because the day temperatures rise above 40°C and then it becomes very difficult for the mercury to come down at night.

Pre-Monsoon showers will abate such oppressive heat but no such weather activity likely till about early next week.
