Prime Minister Narendra spoke about Tamil Nadu floods while addressing the nation on his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Modi has assured complete central aid to the state. Extremely heavy rainfall across the state of Tamil Nadu has led to flooding in most parts of the region. The state capital Chennai too is reeling under flood conditions.
While speaking to the nation, Narendra Modi mentioned Tamil Nadu floods and expressed his sadness surrounding the wide-scale devastation that has taken place in the state. He also said that he had complete faith in the strength of the state, and held global warming responsible for the tragedy.
Modi spoke about Tamil Nadu floods and reiterated his idea of ensuring a full-scale co-operation between South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations when it comes to disaster preparedness. Modi also outlined the need for energy conservation and termed it as everyone’s responsibility.
However, Tamil Nadu government’s damage estimate of Rs. 8481-crore found no mention in Narendra Modi’s 27-minute talk. Modi government has approved a Rs. 940-crore relief package for Tamil Nadu, but is yet to respond to the state's urgent demand of an additional Rs. 2000-crore. Earlier, Jayalalitha too released Rs. 500-crore to speed up rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations in the flood-stricken zone.
Meanwhile, more rain is expected across Tamil Nadu in coming days. Over the last few days, reduced intensity of rain over the region provided marginal relief to the residents. But water levels will recede fully only when rains stop for more than a few days. As of now, conditions in the region remain grim.
