India observed the second International Yoga Day on June 21, 2016. International Day of Yoga was coined by Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly held in the year 2014.
International Yoga Day was celebrated across the globe with immense enthusiasm last year and this year too, people from all parts of the world have assembled together to celebrate this day.
India has a notorious weather pattern and since rains are not easily predictable, the Meteorological Department has also continuously kept an eye on the ongoing weather conditions in order to prevent the event from any unforeseen weather conditions.
In India, where Monsoon has approached in major parts of the nation, there were a few states that actually got affected by rains during or before the event.
Unfortunately, the event in Lucknow was completely washed off due to continuous heavy rains that started at around 4 am in the morning and continued till 9 am. In fact, the intensity of these rainy spells was very high between 5 am and 7 am. During last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, the city has recorded 43.6 mm.
Somewhat similar weather condition was observed in Mumbai. The state witnessed heavy to very heavy rains along with thunderstorm during midnight. Rainfall recorded for this city during last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday was 107.3 mm. However, these showers stopped by morning hours, just before the commencement of the event. But, water logging at few parts of the city made the commuting of participants to the location a little difficult. However, pleasant weather conditions made it easier for them to perform.
Thousands of people participated in Chandigarh, which has witnessed moderate rains of 22.8 mm during last 24 hours. These rains ended up making the weather conditions favorable. Over 30,000 people participated in the International Yoga Day in Delhi that has recorded light rains of 10.3 mm during the similar time frame. However, last night's rain in the capital city along with the NCR made the weather conditions in early morning hours comfortable. Similar conditions were observed in Faridabad as well where approximately one lakh people took part in the event.
Hot and humid weather was also observed in Chennai. Though there were no rains witnessed during the day, few showers can be expected now. Similarly, Kolkata also observed warm and humid weather with no rains but light breeze with few clouds made the weather pleasant with mercury settling around 30°C.
