Winter season for northern plains seems to have entered its last leg. Earlier, during this month, parts of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and Delhi witnessed two wet spells on 01-02 Feb and again on 08-09 Feb. Coupled with snow and rain in the hills, winter chill got revived and low single digit temperatures were observed at most places.
Absence of any weather activity with a fair amount of sunshine, for the last one week has raised the mercury level. Conspicuous absence of fog and cloud cover has led to above normal day temperatures. Somehow, nights continue to be chilly with minimum temperatures running 2-4°C below the normal.
Western disturbances moving across the northern mountains are mostly weak. No weather activity is getting extended to the plains. However, under their influence, cooler winds continue to blow down the slopes, arresting any rise in the night temperatures. Low single digit minimum of 5-6°C continue at few places like Amritsar, Bathinda, Firozpur, Ambala, Karnal, Narnaul and Meerut.
Day temperatures are staying above normal, but in the comfort range of 22-25°C. Nippy nocturnal winds will continue to suppress any change in the minimum temperatures for the next 4-5 days. Mercury will hold above the normal threshold till the weekend. Partial cloud cover may appear on 19thFeb, resulting intermittent sunshine during forenoon hours.
No strong western disturbance is expected in the next week , at the outset. Mild weather system will arrive on the 20th night and initiate light spell of rain at isolated places over north Rajasthan to start with.
Spread will increase on 21stFeb and most parts of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh are expected to have cloudy weather. Sporadic showers at all these places can not be ruled out, albeit of light intensity.
Weather activity will vacate Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan the next day, 22ndFeb. Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh may continue with the remnant effect, even the next day on 22ndFeb. General clearance is expected over the entire region from 23rdFeb.
