Plains of North India turn dry despite rainy days in hills

Up in the hills, Jammu and Kashmir has received light to moderate rains during last 48 hours. On the other hand, many places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have received moderate to heavy rainfall. During last 2 to 3 days, two episodes of cloud busts were also reported from Chamoli and Shimla.

On Wednesday, Almora in Uttarakhand received 21 mm of rainfall. Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir received isolated rains yesterday.

These weather activities over the western Himalayas can be attributed to an active Western Disturbance, which is now moving away. But, we expect back-to-back feeble Western Disturbances as upper air troughs to continue to affect the hilly regions. Therefore, on and off light rains will continue over the hills for another 2 to 3 days.

Coming down to the plains of North India, we witnessed isolated rain and thundershowers during last 48 hours. Till about Friday, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh will receive isolated thunderstorm and dust storm activities followed by thundershowers at few places.

During pre-Monsoon season thundershowers due to convective clouds are a common phenomenon. And, the most probable time are late afternoon and late night hours. After 24 hours, weather condition will go dry in the plains of North India as the trough running from North Rajasthan to Coastal Odisha will start weakening. The recent weather activities were due to the north-south oscillation of this trough along with the ongoing Western Disturbance.

After 24 hours, we could expect marginal rise in temperatures due to clear skies and bright sunshine. The next episode of dust storm and thundershowers may commence in the plains of North India from May 16 or 17.
