Phalodi boils at 50°C, Rajasthan on red alert for severe heatwave

May 19, 2016 11:17 AM |

phalodi heatTemperature records are rapidly getting shattered as North Indian states and towns are left to sizzle under extreme heat conditions. Rajasthan, for instance, has been issued red alert owing to severe heatwave that is expected to prevail in the state for next 3-4 days.

Phalodi that had been featuring in Skymetweather’s hottest list of places in India for last one week is now witnessing day maximum at 50.5°C, which is a tenth of a degree less than the highest temperature ever recorded in the country, 50.6° C at Alwar in 1956.

The temperature is also the highest for Rajasthan this season followed by Churu where the maximum temperature was 49.1°C.

Jaisalmer, Barmer, Sriganganagar, Bikaner, Kota and Jaipur recorded maximum of 48.8, 48.6, 48.5, 48.2, 47.9 and 45.8 degrees Celsius respectively.

The reason for this severe hot weather in north-western parts of the country including Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab is the advection or transfer of heat via hot winds from Pakistan where temperatures have touched 50°C mark. Moreover, the absence of any significant rain in last ten days has also led to dry weather over this region.

The condition is expected to remain similar or worsen in next 24 hours as there is no significant respite from the prevailing heat wave conditions.
