Performance of Southwest Monsoon in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is a very big state in terms of area, therefore the variability of Monsoon rain is also very high. For instance East Rajasthan receives almost double the rainfall received by West Rajasthan.

Last year, the performance of Monsoon in the month of June was very poor in the state. According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rainfall deficiency in East Rajasthan was 62%, while West Rajasthan was deficient by 54%.

This year, the Southwest Monsoon covered the entire state almost three weeks earlier than its onset date of July 15. And since then, Rajasthan has been enjoying some very good rainfall. In fact the pre-Monsoon showers in the state have also been good.

After June 10, both the sub-divisions have remained normal or excess throughout the month of June till July 12. Since June 28, the state most of the time has witnessed excess rainfall.

As of now, West Rajasthan has received 87.8 mm of rain against the normal average of 66.2 mm, which is 32% excess. In East Rajasthan the rainfall amounts are 156.6 mm against the average of 139 mm, which is 13% excess.

For the next 2-3 days, the Southwest Monsoon will remain subdued with isolated light rain at some places. From July 18 till July 21, we could see some good rain over most parts of the state. This spell of rain will probably help in maintaining the excess rainfall figures in the state.
