Pentad Of Under Ten Degree For Delhi, Unseen In Last Ten Years

March 8, 2024 12:27 PM |

Capital city Delhi has been witnessing cool mornings, with a minimum temperature of under 10°C for the last 5 days. This has not been observed, at least for the last ten years. The spell could be longer than a decade. Earlier, the first week for Delhi between the 01st and 07th of March, was the coolest, in the last five years with a mean temperature of 10.8°C against the normal of 13°C. Mercury is expected to rise in the coming days, albeit slowly.

The minimum temperatures were generally in double digits during the first 10 days of the month, between 2016 and 2023. This included the year 2019, which recorded the lowest temperature of  March at 6.8° on the very first day of the month. Out of the last decade, 2016, 2018 and 2023 were the warmest, with the minimum temperature remaining in the mid-teens, on all the days, till 10th March. As per the pentad normal, Delhi has an average temperature of 13-14°C in the first 10 days of March.

Western disturbance is clearing the northern mountains today. But, only a short break and the fresh system arrives late on 10th March.  Accordingly, the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 10°C for the next 2 days and rise thereafter. The maximum temperature has risen in the past 24 hours. It is likely to stay in the 20’s till the weekend. Later, early in the next week, mercury may touch the 30°C mark.  Rain and showers are likely over and around Delhi/NCR on 12th & 13th March 2024.
