Peninsular India witnesses pre-monsoon rain

Rain in KarnatakaAs Peninsular India enters into the pre-monsoon season, several parts of the region, especially the interiors, have started witnessing spells of rain. In last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Sunday Agumbe in Karnataka recorded 64.8 mm of rain, Gulbarga 39.8 mm, Gadag 27.5 mm, Chitradurga 16.8 mm and Bijapur 3.8 mm.

In Telangana, Ramagundam received 27 mm of rain, Nizamabad 5 mm and Hyderabad 0.5 mm. While Kochi in Kerala observed 27 mm of rain.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Peninsular India starts heating up by March and with heat, thunderstorm activities also come up. Moreover, the frequency of low level cyclonic circulation also increases along with wind discontinuity. As a result, frequency of rainy spells also increases but are not very regular.

Maximum temperatures across Peninsular India that broadly comprises of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Maharashtra are already settling in the mid 30s. As we proceed further, the day temperatures also touch 40°C.

On March 8, Nagpur and Solapur in Maharashtra recorded day temperature at 36.1°C and 37.3°C, respectively. In Tamil Nadu, Madurai observed a maximum of 36°C and Tiruchirappalli 35.3°C.

Though there is no specific date but pre-monsoon showers generally commence from mid-March and extend till May. The intensity and spread of pre-monsoon rainfall during this time is reflective of the performance of the coming monsoon season.
