During the past few days, isolated rainfall activity has been observed over Kerala and Telangana. Now, rain has covered parts of Interior Tamil Nadu as well. In fact, heavy rains have lashed the coastal state during the past 24 hours with Palayankottai recording 50 mm of rain.

During the same time, while Kerala has recorded light to moderate rainfall, light rain has also occurred over several parts of Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. On the other hand, mostly dry weather conditions were observed over the newbie Telangana.

During the last 24 hours, Madurai received 16.2 mm of rain followed by Thiruvananathapuram where 13.6 mm of rain was recorded. Other areas to have observed rain during this period include Madikeri 8.8 mm, Hassan and Punalur 7.2 mm each, Kodaikanal 7 mm, Kottayam 3.4 mm, Gadag 1.2 mm, and Mangalore 0.1 mm rainfall.

At present the wind discontinuity which is a semi-permanent feature is extending from Vidarbha to South Tamil Nadu across Interior Karnataka and Interior Tamil Nadu. Due to its oscillation from east to west, the intensity of rain varies over various parts of the Peninsular region.

Now, this trough will continue to persist but it will remain towards the western parts of Peninsular India covering Interior Karnataka, Kerala and parts of South Madhya Maharashtra. During the next two days, rains will remain confined over these areas.

Thereafter, the intensity of rain is likely to decrease significantly as low-pressure area or a depression is expected to form over South Bay of Bengal. Thus, most of the moisture will be concentrated around the weather system leading to decrease in weather activities over Peninsular India.

However, around May 17, rainfall is expected to increase over coastal parts of Tamil Nadu owing to the cyclonic circulation which may or may not intensify into a cyclonic storm.
