This pre-Monsoon season, Odisha witnessed good rains and is surplus by 9%. Although, rain activities have reduced significantly since last one week or so, but past 24 hours saw many districts of Odisha recording good rains. Places like Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Kendujhar, Bhawanipatna, and Koraput witnessed these rains.

Meanwhile, coastal areas of North Odisha like Balasore, Chandbali, Puri, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar remained dry. These rains occurred during late afternoon and evening hours which is the typical pattern of pre-Monsoon season. These rains were in the wake of a north-south trough which was extending from East Bihar to South Peninsula across Odisha. Also, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal were feeding moisture and resulted in enhancing rains over the same.

Contrary to this, the interior parts of Odisha reeled under heat wave, with temperatures in the range of 42°C-45°C. In presence of moisture, temperatures are likely to shoot up which causes unstable conditions in the atmosphere. Such conditions lead to development of thunder clouds and convective clouds. Such clouds usually give intense showers which has a very short life span and are accompanied with strong winds and lightning strikes. At times, hailstorm activities also occur due to such clouds.

We can expect intermittent pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers activities to continue over southern and interior districts of Odisha for next two to three days. Areas like Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Ganjam would witness these rains. The districts adjacent to Jharkhand would be almost dry and hot.
