After having a series of rain deficient seasons in 2018, winters in 2019 began on a good note. By the end of February this year, pan-India was rain surplus by 24%. This excess of rains could be attributed to the frequent passage of active Western Disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulations effecting the northern parts of the country.
But the Pre-Monsoon season i.e. since the beginning of March, rainfall performance has once again dropped and as of March 31, Pan India has recorded 41% rainfall deficiency.
India is divided into 36 sub-divisions, out of which only 8 managed to receive normal/excess rains. These eight sub-divisions include – Sikkim/Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka. However, rest 28 sub-divisions recorded large to very large deficiency. In fact, Konkan & Goa and Gujarat observed no rain.
During Pre-Monsoon season, major rainfall contribution comes from East/Northeast India with 65 mm and Northwest India with 48 mm. Rest all the regions are poor performers during this month. But this season East/Northeast India recorded 33 mm of rain and Northwest India 46 mm.
Talking about Pan India in 2018, all four seasons recorded below normal rains with large variations. Winter season was rain deficient by 62%, followed by Pre-Monsoon season 7%, Monsoon season 9% and Post-Monsoon season 44%.
