Onset of Northeast Monsoon to be delayed but normal

 

The onset of much awaited Northeast Monsoon may have faced a delay owing to the typhoons in the Pacific but it is likely to remain normal when it commences in parts of Peninsular India next week. Heavy rain is expected around October 27-28 in Tamil Nadu, which is most likely to mark the onset of rainy spells in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

A cyclonic circulation is expected to develop over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast by early next week and is further expected to intensify into a low-pressure area around October 27. Under the influence of the intensification of this weather system, Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas of the Peninsular India are expected to receive widespread heavy rain by mid-next week.

The departing Southwest Monsoon may have left the country with a rain deficit. However, Northeast Monsoon is likely to be normal this year.

Moreover, Tamil Nadu that practically receives about 45% of its annual rainfall during the season extending from October to December is most likely to receive enough rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon.
