Ongoing heavy rain to reduce along the West Coast

June 10, 2015 3:58 PM |

Kerala MonsoonIn the beginning of the month, from June 2 to June 4, Kerala and coastal Karnataka received good pre-Monsoon showers which led to declaration of Monsoon onset over the region. But soon after the onset on June 5, rainfall decreased over Kerala and coastal Karnataka due to the weakening of Monsoon surge, as a low pressure area developed in the Arabian Sea.

When this system gained momentum and intensified into a cyclonic circulation on June 8, strong southwesterly winds started blowing over the west coast leading to increased rainfall activity over coastal Karnataka and Konkan and Goa once again.

For instance, Mangalore in the last three days has received 183 mm of rain, while Honavar has recorded 85 mm of rain. Goa during the same period has observed 76 mm of rain. While Karwar in the last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Tuesday has received a whopping 79 mm of rain.

But as the cyclonic storm Ashobaa has moved far away, near to the Oman coast, all the moisture and wind from the region (west coast) has been pulled away by the system. Therefore, significant decrease in rainfall activity is expected along the west coast for at least 2-3 days.

However, a fresh Monsoon surge is likely around June 14 and June 15, which will again give some good amounts of rain in the region.
