On and off winter rains to continue over Northeast India

Rain in Northeast IndiaAt present, Northeast India is the only pocket in the country which has been witnessing weather activity for the last few days. Scattered light rain has been observed over the region in the last three to four days.

According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is prevailing over Meghalaya and adjoining Assam region that has given the weather over the region, particularly over parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Guwahati recorded 1.7 mm of rain, North Lakhimpur 1.6 mm, Shillong 1.2 mm, Gayalsingh 2 mm and Gangtok 0.4 mm.

With the system getting less marked, rain activity will also reduce during next two days but light to very light rainfall will continue.However as the Western Disturbance moves eastwards, rains will pick up once again and intensity will increase.

Northeast India does not witness any heavy rains during the winter season. Monthly average rainfall for most of the places are also in single digits.

This year, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya have already surpassed their normal average rainfall. While, Sikkim is witnessing surplus rains.

Meanwhile, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are rain deficient by almost 50%.
