Latur in the Marathwada sub division of Maharashtra has been reeling under intense drought conditions for quite some time now. The situation was so bad a while ago that water trains were required to be sent to drought-hit Latur in the absence of rains.
During the month of June, Latur received very less rains making conditions worse for the region. So much so that Southwest Monsoon also made a delayed onset over entire Maharashtra including the Marathwada sub-division.
However, July brought in some good news for the residents of Latur. During the first week of July, good rain was observed over many parts of Marathwada including Latur. According to Skymet Weather’s AWS data, many parts of Latur have been receiving moderate rains since the beginning of July.
So much so that during the last one week, Latur has received a good 39 mm of rain. These rains can be attributed to the weather system which has caused flooding in Madhya Pradesh. On and off rains are likely to continue over Latur in the coming days.
Currently, Marathwada sub division has been observing a rainfall surplus of 13 percent. While these rains will not be able to completely solve the drought problem in Latur, this Monsoon will surely bring some good news for the region.
