Odisha to witness more Monsoon rains

August 22, 2016 3:48 PM |

Odisha Rains

Southwest Monsoon had been active over Odisha on several occasions this season.

The month of August was considerably better in terms of rainfall for Odisha than June and July. Successive weather systems which developed over Northwest Bay of Bengal had given good rains over most parts of the state.

At present, a well-marked low-pressure area can be seen over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand leading to good rainfall over the interiors as well as the northern districts of Odisha during last 24 hours.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, significant showers were seen over Puri which recorded 39.2 mm of rainfall while Bhubaneswar received 17 mm of rains. Balasore also received 12.3 mm of rainfall and Keonjhargarh recorded 10.3 mm of rainfall.

The system is likely to move westwards, away from Odisha. Therefore, rains will reduce over the state after 24 hours. However, scattered light to moderate Monsoon rains will continue over several parts of Odisha for the next few days as well.

At present, Odisha is witnessing deficient Monsoon rains. As on August 21, the cumulative rainfall deficiency for the state stands at 14%. Nevertheless, the state still falls under the category of normal Monsoon rains as of now. With more rains in offing, we expect the state to cover up the deficiency and head towards surplus rains.
