Southwest Monsoon marked its arrival on time. However, it fell short of covering the entire state of Odisha on time. Normally, by June 10, it covers the state as a whole. Monsoon touched on June 12, but the entire state came under the influence of Monsoon rains, only on June 27. This situation had occurred as Monsoon remained stagnant for about two weeks before finally making a proper onset over East India.
Thus, the month of June had began on a deficient note but started to perform in the month of July due to the systems forming in the Bay of Bengal. By July 15, rains were deficient to the tune of 15 percent. However, as rains occurred over the state between July 14 and 17, the deficiency dropped to -3 percent by July 17.
Good rains continued over the state of Odisha and by July 21, Odisha’s rain stats went on the positive side with 3 percent surplus rainfall. Thereafter, before the fag end of the month of July, rainfall amounts went to a whopping 16 percent surplus due to good showers over the state.
Thereafter, rains did reduce and as on August 6, rain surplus was reduced to a mere 1 percent.
However, day before yesterday saw heavy rainfall activity and showers remained on the higher side. Thus, even now, rains remain on the positive side and continue to be on the plus side with 3 percent surplus in rains.
Irrespective of the countrywide Monsoon performance, Odisha never disappoints and manages to achieve its normal limit. All thanks to the formation of Monsoon systems in the Bay of Bengal.
Below is the table which is proof of no matter how Monsoon has performed through the country, Odisha does record good rains:
Even the worst of Monsoons season has systems forming in the Bay of Bengal. It is invariably due to the long coastline of Odisha, the systems do go through the state regardless of its position of formation in Bay.
Regional variations of rains are seen in the state, but on the whole, Odisha never underperforms during Monsoon.
