The eastern state of Odisha is one of the states that mostly performs well during the Monsoon season. Even Monsoon made its timely arrival over Pan India, but it got for Odisha and arrived on June 27 against its normal date of June 10.

Due to Monsoons late arrival the month of June was largely deficient as very poor rains were witnessed by the state. It was rain deficient by 27%. However, rains picked up pace and gradually recovery started.

Thereafter, as systems formed in the Bay of Bengal triggered good rainfall activity over the Odisha, the state’s rain deficiency came down to 15% by mid-July.

During the third and fourth week of July extremely good rainfall activity was recorded in Odisha and by July 17, Odisha was rain deficient only by 3%. However, towards the end of July the state had become rainfall surplus by 6%.

Further in august Monsoon showed satisfactory performance and Odisha has become rain surplus by 10%. In fact, as of September 11, the state of Odisha is rainfall surplus by 13% and has received 1155.5 mm of rain against its normal of 1022.7 mm. Thus, we can say that this year, Odisha is one of the best performing sub-division during the Southwest Monsoon season.

Let us have a look at the rainfall surplus/deficient of Odisha since the last 10 years -

Moreover, at present, out of its 30 districts only 1 district i.e. Balangir is rain deficient by 21%. Rest all the other districts are normal to excess. In fact, the district Puri is largely rain surplus by 62%.

In the past also we have seen that, Odisha has been performing well since the last 10 years. Even the severe drought year of 2009, where Pan India was deficient by 22%, this state managed to stay near normal.

Now with weak Monsoon phase going on over the entire country, rains have gone scanty and this situation is expected to continue for the next one week as no weather system is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal.
