At present, the Severe Cyclone Titli is over west-central Bay of Bengal. In fact, conditions are favorable for its further intensification into a very severe cyclone any time soon.
Warm sea surface temperatures to the tune of 29-30 degrees Celsius and vertical wind shear is also low at 10 to 15 kts. The cyclone is expected to cross North Andhra Pradesh or South Odisha Coast by tomorrow morning.
Due to this severe cyclone, moderate rains have already occurred over the coastal stations of Odisha. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Paradip recorded 29.2 mm of rain, followed by Chandabali 22 mm, Puri 13 mm, Bhubaneshwar 8 mm, Cuttack 5 mm, Balasore 3 mm and Gopalpur 1 mm.
Now we expect intensity of these rains to further increase and heavy to extremely heavy rains may occur over coastal districts of Odisha. In fact, interior districts of the state will also get moderate spells of rain.
After reaching the coast, cyclone will weaken and start moving initially in northerly direction and then to northeast direction. We expect intensity of rains to reduce by October 12 but light to moderate rains will continue over the northern districts. By October 13, weather conditions will start clearing over the state.
However, between October 10 and 12, we expect water logging, flash floods and damage to property over the coastal districts of Odisha.
In view of the above scenario, the people of Odisha are advised not to venture out or towards the sea for at least the next two days.
