Odisha breaks from the clutches of drought, flooding rains likely

The state of Odisha has a large inter seasonal variability, but the interest seasonal variability is low. Moreover, monsoon rains for the past 10 years have remained between +/- 10 of the normal level in the state of Odisha.

In fact, even during the drought of 2009 where A deficiency of 22% was observed, Odisha had witnessed normal rainfall.

This season, the onset of monsoon was delayed over the state. Therefore, the month of June left a deficiency of 27% over Odisha. As the rains continue to evade the state even during the first few days of July, thus until July 7, the deficiency mounted to a whopping - 30%.

However, the rainfall deficiency improved by the end of second week and was at - 23%.

Thereafter, a significant improvement was seen in the deficiency as good rainfall activity was observed between July 15 and 18. These rains had occurred due to the movement of Monsoon systems in proximity of Odisha. The deficiency thereby came down to - 7%.

A fresh system is now giving good rains are coastal parts of Odisha. In fact, more rainfall is likely over the state which may even result in flood like conditions.
